No More Cheeto Hands: Self-Tanning Tips for a Flawless Glow
If you’ve ever looked down at your palms after a self-tan and thought, “Yikes,” you’re not alone. Whether you’re a bride preparing for your big day or just want to look sun-kissed without the sun damage, the last thing you want is patchy, orangey, tell-tale tan hands.
As a former spray tan technician and self-tanning devotee since middle school, I’ve seen it all. So today, I’m giving you my foolproof method to get that flawless, radiant glow without sacrificing your hands, feet, or your sanity.
Whether you’re getting a professional spray tan or doing it at home, this routine works for both. Ready? Let’s glow, girl.
Ways to Ruin Your Tan Before You Even Start
Prep is everything. Don’t skip these steps!
Exfoliate + Shave 24 Hours Before
No, a loofah isn’t enough. You need a real exfoliating mitt (I linked my fave on Amazon below). This clears off dead skin so your tan glides on evenly.Clean Skin Only
No makeup, deodorant, perfume, lotion, or even SWEAT on your body before your appointment or tanning session. These create barriers or react with the formula = orange or uneven tan. And, NO, you cannot use a baby wipe to “wipe” this off before your tan. You must shower and be fully dry at least 1 hour before tanning, or you risk the tan not reaching it’s full development.Dress for the Glow-Up
For spray tans, show up in baggy clothes (think: loose joggers, oversized tee) and slides or flip flops. No bras, socks, or leggings! Bring or wear a thong or g-string or opt for the salon’s disposable undies.
The Hands + Feet Trick (No More Cheeto Hands!)
This part is key whether you're using a mousse, express tan, or getting professionally sprayed.
Barrier Cream is Your BFF
Before tanning, apply plain lotion (or barrier cream) to your hands, feet, elbows, knees, ankles, and wrists. This prevents over-absorption in these dry areas.Yes, Tan Your Hands
Leaving them out looks super obvious—but you have to do it strategically.
After applying tanner:
Wash your palms only with cold water and soap.
Use a baby wipe if it was a spray tan: wipe palms, dab lightly around wrists, tops of hands, in between fingers and creases.
Don't go past your first wrist line.
Gently pat dry, then apply plain lotion in a feathering motion from wrists onto the tops of hands and fingers, and side of palms.
Do the same around feet, ankles, and toes.
Post-Tan Aftercare: Don’t Let It Go to Waste
Wear loose, dark clothing during development time.
Avoid water, sweating, or tight items (this includes bras + crossbody bags).
First rinse = water only. No soap or lotion yet!
Wait another 8 hours, then shower normally. Use only hands to apply body wash—no loofahs.
Moisturize daily (I linked my go-to tan-safe lotion below).
Avoid shaving, coconut oil, or mineral oils. These break down your tan.
Gradual tan lotion can help maintain the glow longer.

My Amazon Self-Tanning Must-Haves
Occassionally, I get an airbrush spray tan at my favorite spot in San Diego, Sunless Revolution. But as someone who likes to be tan year-round, I opt for at-home products for convenience and affordability.
